Rabbit Hole

Script by David Lindsey-Abaire, produced by 2nd Studio and directed by Lyndsey Kay Nelson

Put simply, Rabbit Hole is a play about grief, but one of the most important things that Rabbit Hole teaches us is that grief is never simple.

Our world has been weighed down by grief as unprecedented events have changed the way we view the things around us. We are coping, constantly, but the grief movies so often shown to us makes it hard to make us feel like we are “grieving in the right way”.

However, Rabbit Hole reminds us that there isn’t a correct way to grieve. In this production we watch five characters throwing blame and arguments at each other, we see denial and infidelity, we see guilt in a clear and visceral way and we see how dwelling on that guilt can tear a life apart. We see how guilt can create rabbit holes that endlessly drag us back and away from progressing.

Forgiveness is the healing power that we so desperately search for, not just forgiveness for the others around us, but forgiveness for ourselves. It is only when the characters admit the guilt they feel and forgive themselves as well as each other that they are able to find the power to navigate out of their individual rabbit holes and finally find real connection to each other.

I hope that as we walk away from this show, we are all able to forgive ourselves, each other, and the world around us for the turmoil of our past, and finally are able to move forward—not alone, obviously, but together.

We will figure this inconceivable world out together. We will. I know we will.
